A risk-free strategy that guarantees profit by backing all outcomes of an event across different bookmakers — no matter who wins.
Every bookmaker builds a margin into their odds — they price outcomes so that if you bet on everything with one bookmaker, you always lose a small percentage. But different bookmakers set different odds on the same event.
An arbitrage opportunity appears when those differences are large enough that betting on every outcome across multiple bookmakers costs less than the guaranteed return. The gap between what you stake and what you receive back is your locked-in profit.
Suppose Bet9ja and Betking price an Over/Under 2.5 goals market for Chelsea vs Arsenal differently:
| Bookmaker | Outcome | Odds | Implied Probability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bet9ja | Over 2.5 goals | 2.10 | 1 ÷ 2.10 = 47.6% |
| Betking | Under 2.5 goals | 2.20 | 1 ÷ 2.20 = 45.5% |
The total implied probability is only 93.1% — not 100%. That 6.9% gap is the arbitrage. By staking ₦4,762 on Over at Bet9ja and ₦4,545 on Under at Betking (total ₦9,307), you receive back roughly ₦10,000 regardless of the result — a guaranteed profit of ~₦693.
1/odds1 + 1/odds2 + .... If the total is less than 1 (or 100%), an arb exists.
Stake = (1/odds ÷ total_inv_sum) × total_stake. This splits your money proportionally so every outcome returns the same amount.
Return = any_leg_stake × its_odds. Your profit is Return minus your total stake.
Pre-filled with the Chelsea vs Arsenal example above. Change the odds to test any scenario:
On every arb card you'll see a green badge like 2.4%. This is the profit as a percentage of your total stake.
Even 1–2% arbs are valuable when you stake consistently. Ten 1% arbs per day on ₦50,000 each = ₦5,000/day risk-free.
Arbs are time-sensitive. If you place the first bet and the second bookie moves their odds before you place the second, you may no longer have an arb — or could even have a loss.
Bookmakers may limit or close accounts of consistent winners. Use multiple accounts, stake sensibly, and don't always stake the maximum.
If one leg of your arb is voided (e.g. match abandoned), your other bet still stands. This can turn a guaranteed profit into an open position.
Over/Under goals, Asian Handicap and player props markets tend to have more variation between bookmakers — prime hunting ground for arbs.
Practice with small stakes first to get comfortable with speed and execution. The maths always works — the risk is in the execution.
